History of Gambling in Switzerland

Gambling in Switzerland started around the 18th century. During this time, many forms of gambling, including race betting, dice games, and card games, were illegal. Specifically, betting on these games was banned based on religious and moral grounds. Many players, however, continued to operate illegally. In 1874, the government of Switzerland prohibited gambling houses in unclear terms. Most of the Swiss Cantons respected this ruling, meaning they stopped allowing gambling to take place. In 1881, the first Swiss casino by the name Casino Barriere was opened.

In 1923, the Swiss government passed two bills that had harsh regulations on lotteries and casinos. These bills include the Federal Act on Lotteries and Commercial Betting and the Federal Act on Gambling Houses. According to these two bills, lotteries and casinos were only allowed to operate in certain cantons. Also, the bills stated that a large share of the revenue must go to the community investments. In 1993, the Swiss government was forced to create new sources of revenue due to the rising cost of healthcare. To this end, the gambling industry was liberalized, making land-based casinos operate legally on a wider scale.

The government of Switzerland passed other bills in 1998 and 2000 which divided gambling houses into Type A and Type B licenses. During this time, casino operators had to do identity verification to prevent underage gambling. In 2017, the Money Gaming Act, which legalized online casinos, was passed. Also, residents voted to legalize online casinos in 2019.

Gambling Laws in Switzerland

Switzerland has strict laws when it comes to online gambling. In fact, the country passed the Federal Act on Money Games, which dictates how online gambling should be conducted. According to this law, every casino must acquire a Swiss eGaming License in order to provide online gaming services in Switzerland. Additionally, the law requires online casinos to partner with at least one land-based casino. Better yet, the law requires the Swiss Federal Gaming Board to blacklist all foreign online casinos. The Swiss Federal Gaming Board is responsible for issuing two licenses, including the following:

Casino License A

This is the grand license, and casinos with this license can provide a wide range of casino games, including progressive jackpots and high stakes. Furthermore, casinos with this license can offer unlimited table games and gaming machines.

Casino License B

This license requires casinos to only have a maximum of three tables. On top of that, there are no progressive jackpots, and the betting amount cannot exceed CHF 25.

When it comes to online sports betting, Gespa is the authority responsible for regulating online sportsbooks. Precisely, the authority oversees sports betting, lottery, Bingo, and skill-based games.
